When Work & Family Collide by Andy Stanley is a practical book about finding the much-needed balance between work and home. Stanley claims that we all cheat. He defines cheating as choosing to give up one thing in hope of gaining something else of greater value. Unfortunately, we tend to cheat our families in pursuit of our careers. Stanley says we have to “choose to cheat” in certain areas of our life because we cannot give 100% to everything we are involved in. He encourages his readers to constantly monitor the hearts of our family members to assure they are not feeling slighted. Stanley claims, “You do your job. You love your family. It’s when we reverse the order that the tension escalates and the tug of war begins.” Stanley’s book is an easy read and I found it helpful seeing as I am at the start of my career and seeking to find the balance between work and home.
